Sanskrit
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mā́Hasas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́Hasas, genitive of *mā́Has, from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon; month”), probably from *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Latin mensis, Ancient Greek μήν (mḗn), Old Persian 𐎶𐎠𐏃 (māha), Old English mōnaþ, mōna (whence English month, moon).
