Inherited from Old Marathi वही (vahī), वैही (vaihī), वैह्य (vaihya), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (vahiyā), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā). Cognate to Gujarati વહી (vahī), Hindi बही (bahī), Sindhi وَهِي / वही, Punjabi ਵਹੀ (vahī), ਬਹੀ (bahī), Oriya ବହି (bôhi), ବଇ (bôi), Bengali বই (bôi), Assamese বহী (bohi).
