Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *uwanṯu. By surface analysis, உ- (u-, demonstrative base) +‎ -அன் (-aṉ, masculine suffix particle).

This pronoun is not currently in use in Tamil Nadu Tamil but is used in Sri Lankan Tamil. அவன் (avaṉ) and இவன் (ivaṉ) are used in place of this pronoun based on proximity in Tamil Nadu Tamil.
