[edit]

Borrowed from Pali dāna (alms; donation; gift); ultimately from Sanskrit दान (dāna, idem). Cognate with Old Khmer dāna, dān; Modern Khmer ទាន (tiən); Lao ທານ (thān).

Extended versions of the Sanskrit term include Sanskrit प्रदान (pradāna), from which Thai ประทาน (bprà-taan) was derived.

Etymology 2

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Borrowed from Chinese (MC tam|tamH, “to bear, shoulder”)? If so, then potentially a doublet of หาม (hǎam, to carry). Alternatively, related to the "alms" sense of Etymology 1 somehow, though semantic links, if they exist, seem opaque.”
