From Proto-Tai *ŋɯəkᴰ (crocodile), from Middle Chinese (MC ngak, “crocodile”). Cognate with Lao ເງືອກ (ngư̄ak), Shan ငိူၵ်ႈ (ngōek), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (ṅük).
