Alternative forms
Etymology
Unknown. Perhaps from Portuguese sabão (“soap”) + 手 (te, “hand”), as cactus stems were used by the Portuguese to remove stains. The kanji are an Orthographic borrowing from Chinese 仙人掌 (xiānrénzhǎng).
