Etymology[edit]

Reduplication of 馬鹿 (baka, foolish, stupid; a fool, an idiot) + adjective-forming suffix しい (-shii). Attested from at least the early 1800s,[1], but likely older, as the しい (-shii) suffix was much more productive earlier, such as during the Heian period (794–1185).
