Borrowed from Japanese 先生(せんせい) (sensei, teacher; elder), from Middle Chinese 先生 (MC sen sraeng, “master, elder”), from (MC sen, “earlier, first”) + (MC sraeng, “born”). Compare modern Mandarin 先生 (xiānshēng, “Mr.”).
