From Spanish Curaçao, from Portuguese Curação, probably as a transcription of a Lokono endonym but sometimes folk-etymologized as derived from Portuguese Ilha da Curação (Isle of Healing) from curação (cure, healing) in reference to the island's use as a place of recovery for sailors sick with scurvy and other ailments or from modification of coração (heart) in reference to its supposed importance in local trade.
