From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English *erthling, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English yrþling, ierþling, eorþling (husbandman, farmer, ploughman, literally one of the earth), equivalent to earth +‎ -ling and/or Earth +‎ -ling. Cognate with Dutch aardling (Earthling), German Erdling (Earthing).
