Etymology[edit]

Russian Ки́ев ‎(Kíjev), from the name of a legendary founder, Кий ‎(Kij), a Slavic word for "bat," though some dismiss this as folk etymology and instead trace it to a local word.

Compare Ukrainian Ки́їв ‎(Kýjiv), from Кий ‎(Kyj). (see Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv in Wikipedia)
