Etymology[edit]

From Russian Ки́ев (Kíjev), from the name of a legendary founder, Кий (Kij), from Proto-Slavic *kyjь "stick, club", though some dismiss this as folk etymology and instead trace it to a local word. Compare Ukrainian Ки́їв (Kýjiv), from Кий (Kyj).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkiːɛv/, /ˈkiːɛf/, /ˈkiːɪv/
    • (file)
  • Rhymes: -ɛv

Proper noun[edit]

  2. A province, an oblast of Ukraine. Seat: Kiev.
  3. (historical) A former principality in Europe. The medieval principality centered on Kiev; the Kievan state or Kievan Rus.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The choice between the Russian-derived name Kiev and the Ukrainian-derived name Kyiv may be interpreted as having political overtones.
  • In the 20th century the city was almost universally known as Kiev. Style guides updated between 2005 and 2020 recommend using the spelling Kyiv. The Ukrainian government's official roman-alphabet name for the city is Kyiv, according to the national standard for romanization of Ukrainian Київ (Kyjiv), and has been adopted by geographic naming databases, international organizations, and by many other reference sources. See w:Name_of_Kyiv.
