Proto-Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From *ja, of uncertain origin. Some have connected this to Proto-Indo-European *ís, *éy, and *Hyós. This would make it related to Old Church Slavonic онъ (onŭ, he), Latin idem (the same), and Sanskrit एन (ena, that; he). This term could also be the nasal-extended a-stem prononimal form of *jai.

This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
