From Middle English Scotland, Scotlond, from Old English Scotland (“Ireland", later also "Scotland”, literally “land of the Scots”), equivalent to Scot + land.

- In the history of Scotland, the country's monarchs should not be described as "Kings of Scotland" but as "Kings of Scots".
