Etymology

From Middle English Scotland, Scotlond, from Old English Scotland (Ireland", later also "Scotland, literally land of the Scots), equivalent to Scot +‎ land.

Pronunciation

Proper noun

Scotland

  1. A country in northwest Europe to the north of England and forming part of the United Kingdom.
  2. Lua error in Module:names at line 629: dot= and nodot= are no longer supported in Template:surname because a trailing period is no longer added by default; if you want it, add it explicitly after the template referring to someone from Scotland.

Usage notes

  • In the history of Scotland, the country's monarchs should not be described as "Kings of Scotland" but as "Kings of Scots".
