From Middle English childbyrth, chyldberth, chylde-byrthe, perhaps a partial calque of Old Norse barnburðr (childbearing, childbirth, literally bairn birth); equivalent to child +‎ birth. Compare Swedish barnsbörd (childbirth), Icelandic barnsburður (childbirth).
