From Pidgin English chin-chin (an expression of gratitude, salutation or congratulations), a reduplication of Mandarin (qǐng, please), misinterpreted as onomatopoeic of two glasses clinking. Compare Portuguese tchim-tchim, tim-tim, Spanish chinchín.
