From Iranian, more specifically possibly from Alanic, compare Ossetian ӕрзӕ́ ‎(ærzǽ), Persian هزار ‎(hezâr)). The Iranian word is from Proto-Indo-European *(sm̥-)ǵʰéslo-.[1]
