[edit]From earlier farge, from Middle Low German varwe, verwe, from *Old Saxon farwi, *farawi (“colour”), from Proto-Germanic *farwō, from Proto-Indo-European *per-, *perḱ- (“motley, coloured”). Cognate with Old High German farawa (“color”) (German Farbe), Old High German faro (“colored”), Latin pulcher (“beautiful, sheen”), Ancient Greek περκνός (perknós, “multicolored”), Old Irish earc (“spotted”).
