Etymology[edit]

From Old High German vliozan, from Proto-Germanic *fleutaną, akin to English fleet (verb), Old Saxon fliotan and Dutch vlieten.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈfliːsn̩/, /ˈfliːsən/
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

fließen ‎(class 2 strong, third-person singular simple present fließt, past tense floss, past participle geflossen, past subjunctive flösse, auxiliary sein)

  1. (intransitive) to flow

Conjugation[edit]

Before 1996, the conjugated forms floss and flosst were spelled floß and floßt respectively. Since the 1996 German Spelling Reform, though, they are spelled with ss.
