- probably from earlier Old Javanese giri (“mountain”) as Javanese ꦒꦶꦭꦶ (gili, “mountain ridge; dunes; way”).
- probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *dliʔ (“firm, immovable”), such as in Khmer ធ្លី (thlii, “land, terra firma”).
