Finnish[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *lakci (compare Karelian laksi, Veps laht, Estonian laht, Votic lahti, Northern Sami luokta), borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Lithuanian lanktis (“arc”)).[1] -ht- in the nominative is by analogy with the oblique case forms; the expected form laksi (compare the declension of kaksi) has fallen out of usage in the standard language but survives in Swedish toponyms (as -lax) and some dialects, such as in the South Ostrobothnian dialectal toponym lakso (“a small pool of water, a puddle”).
