Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *lakci, a possible Baltic loan. -ht- in the nominative is by analogy with the oblique case forms; the expected form laksi (compare the declension of kaksi) has fallen out of usage.

Cognates include Karelian laksi, Veps laht, Estonian laht, Votic lahti and Northern Sami luokta.[1]
