luode
Finnish
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈluo̯deˣ/, [ˈluo̞̯de̞(ʔ)]
- Rhymes: -uode
- Syllabification(key): luo‧de
- Hyphenation(key): luo‧de
Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *loodëh[1] (compare Estonian loe, Ingrian looe, loove, Karelian luuveh (“west; southwest”), Livonian lūod, Ludian luodeh (“west”), Veps lode (“northwest; west”), lodeh (“northwest; west”), Votic looõ (“northwest”)). Dialectally both the meanings “northwest” and “west” were found, the latter historically predominant in Eastern Finnish; the meaning in Standard Finnish was standardized to the former.[2]
Of uncertain further origin; possibly akin to luoda and luo (possibly a verb with like *luotaa (“to descend”)), or alternatively of Germanic origin, like luode (etymology 2).[3]
Noun
[edit]luode
- northwest
- (dialectal, especially Eastern Finnish, archaic) synonym of länsi (“west”)
