Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *mat, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mat. Akin to Pong mat, Muong [Hòa Bình] mặt, Chut [Rục] mə̆àt⁸, Old Mon mɔt (Modern Mon မတ် ‎(mòt)). Compare Proto-Austronesian *maCa (Malay mata), Proto-Tai *p.taːᴬ (Thai ตา ‎(taa)), Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mik ~ *myak (Chinese ( < OC *C.muk), Tibetan མིག ‎(mig)).

Sino-Vietnamese: mục (, "eye" > "item"), nhãn (, "eye" > "longan").
