Etymology[edit]

From the same source as maksts (q.v.): Proto-Baltic *mak-, from Proto-Indo-European *mak- “small (leather) bag or pouch.” Cognates include Lithuanian mãkas, Old Prussian dantimax “gums” (dantis “tooth”), Old Church Slavonic мошьна ‎(mošĭna), Russian мошна ‎(moshná) “small bag or pouch,” Old High German maga, German Magen “stomach.”[1]
