German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Low German püttkern (to handle liquids, to draw or scoop them up (schöpfen) or to drink), also pöttkern, from Pott (pot) and +‎ -kern (denoting a repeated activity, often of lesser intensity).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

püttkern (weak, third-person singular present püttkert, past tense püttkerte, past participle gepüttkert, auxiliary haben)

  1. (Eastern Westphalia) to eat or drink casually instead of by reason of nutritional need
    • 2014 November 28, Thomas C. Breuer, “Manche mögen’s glüh”, in taz.de[1]:
