Etymology

Coined by British chemist Humphry Davy in 1808, from soda +‎ -ium, "soda" being from Italian soda, which may be from Arabic سُوَّاد (suwwād, saltwort) or Arabic سُوَيْدَاء (suwaydāʾ, Suaeda).[1]
