Inherited, from a Vulgar Latin *sēperāre (or *ex-sēperāre), from Latin sēparāre, present active infinitive of sēparō (I separate), from sē- (apart) +‎ parō (prepare). Compare Asturian dixebrar, Old Spanish xebrar, exebrar, dessebrar, Occitan sebrar, French sevrer. Doublet of separar, a borrowing.
