Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *lěto (“year”), from Proto-Indo-European *leh₁tom. Cognate with Ukrainian літо (lito), Belarusian слеціць (sljecicʹ, “to warm”), слетный (sljetnyj, “warmish”), Bulgarian лято (ljato), Serbo-Croatian лето, љето, Slovene poletje, Czech léto, Slovak leto, Polish lato, and Upper and Lower Sorbian lěto. Possibly also cognate with Old Gutnish laþigs (“spring”) and dialectal Swedish låding, låing (“spring”), i lådigs (“last spring”) (from Proto-Germanic *lēþ-), and with Irish lá (“day”). In addition, лѣто (lěto) may be related to Old Church Slavonic лѣѭ (lějǫ, “to pour”), which is cognate with Lithuanian and Latvian lietus (“rain”). Possibly also related to Latin laetus (“rich, fertile, excellent”).
