From Proto-Slavic *peťi, from Proto-Indo-European *pekʷ-, whence English cook, culinary, cuisine, concoct and peptic. Cognates include Russian пот (pot, sweat, perspiration), Sanskrit पचति (pácati), Albanian pjek, Tocharian B päk-, Ancient Greek πέσσω (péssō), Latin coquō.
