Ukrainian[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Inherited from Old Ruthenian трепати (trepati), from Old East Slavic трепати (trepati), from Proto-Slavic *trepati. The unexpected "і" in the root might come from the iterative forms such as трі́пати (trípaty) (See etymology 2) or -трі́пувати (-trípuvaty), where it is expected. Compare клепа́ти, клі́пати (klepáty, klípaty).
