Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hmbʾl (hambār, store), from Old Persian *𐏃𐎶𐎲𐎠𐎼 (hambāra-), from Proto-Iranian *ham-bāra-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sam-bʰāra-, from Proto-Indo-European *sem- (together) + *bʰer- (carry). Cognate with Manichaean Middle Persian hmbʾr (hambār), Manichaean Parthian ʾmbʾrg(ambārag) (< *ʾmbʾr(ambār)), Avestan 𐬵𐬅𐬨𐬠𐬀𐬭(hą̇̇mbar), and Sanskrit सम्भार (sambhārá, provision, necessaries, materials). Akin to Old Armenian համբար (hambar), ամբար (ambar), Classical Syriac ܐܡܒܪܐ(ʾambārāʾ), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אמברא(ʾambārāʾ), Hebrew אַמְבָּר(ʾambār); Iranian borrowings.
