Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hmbʾl ‎(hambār, store), from Old Persian *𐏃𐎶𐎲𐎠𐎼 ‎(hambāra-), from Proto-Iranian *ham-bāra-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sam-bʰāra-, from Proto-Indo-European *sem- ‎(together) + *bʰer- ‎(carry). Cognate with Manichaean Middle Persian hmbʾr ‎(hambār), Manichaean Parthian ʾmbʾrg ‎(ambārag) (< *ʾmbʾr ‎(ambār)), Avestan 𐬵𐬅𐬨𐬠𐬀𐬭 ‎(hą̇̇mbar), and Sanskrit सम्भार ‎(sambhārá, provision, necessaries, materials). Akin to Old Armenian ամբար ‎(ambar), Classical Syriac ܐܡܒܪܐ ‎(ʾambārāʾ), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אמברא ‎(ʾambārāʾ), Hebrew אַמְבָּר ‎(ʾambār); Iranian borrowings.
