Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *muktás, from Proto-Indo-European *muk-tó-s (“released, discharged”), from *(s)mewk- (“to free, escape”). Synchronically analyzable as the root मुच् (√muc, “to loosen, let loose, free” (verb मुञ्चति (muñcáti))) + -त (-ta, “-ed”).
