Ultimately from Chinese (MC kwa|kwaH, “to surpass, to exceed; than”). Cognate with Lao ກວ່າ (kuā, than, more than), Shan ၵႂႃႇ (kwàa, to go), Vietnamese quá (to exceed; very, excessive).
