Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *tʰajᴮ¹ (to redeem; to ransom) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨳᩱ᩵, Khün ᨳᩱ᩵, Lao ໄຖ່ (thai), ᦺᦏᧈ (ṫhay¹), Tai Dam ꪼꪖ꪿, Tai Dón ꪼꪖꫀ, Shan ထႆႇ (thài), Tai Nüa ᥗᥭᥱ (thǎy), Phake ထႝ (thay), Ahom *𑜌𑜩 (*thay).
