Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khyûi "broken burnt rice"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Perhaps a semantic extension of the "break" sense in Etymology 3?”

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *k(r/y)aw ~ *kh(r/y)aw ~ *k(h)ləw (to break, snap (a stick)), though STEDT does not link the root to any Burmese entries and adduces no further cognates, nor is it mentioned by Luce 1981.

Etymology 4

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *krəw-t (to wash), and cognate with Tibetan ཁྲུད (khrud, to wash) (STEDT). Luce adduces Old Chinese (OC *loɡ, “to bathe”) as a cognate;[1] note also similarities to (OC *r'eːwɢs, *r'eːwɢ, “to moisten, wash”), which STEDT tentatively compares both to this root as well as to the probably-unrelated Proto-Sino-Tibetan *glwak (to shine, flash).
