Etymology
[edit]From 遼/辽 (“Liao River”) + 寧/宁 (“peace; tranquility”).
The name was adopted in 1929, replacing the former name 奉天 (fèngtiān, “Fengtian”), with the meaning of "eternal peace in the Liao River basin" (遼河永久安寧).
