From Ancient Greek καλῶ (kalô), contracted form of καλέω (kaléō, call).

Pronunciation

Verb

καλώ (kaló) (past κάλεσα, passive καλούμαι) passive past: καλέστηκα, κλήθηκα

  1. call, hail (someone by name)
  2. summon, invite
  3. dial, ring (by telephone)

Usage notes

  • Passive past with stem κλη- as in κλήθηκα (klíthika, I was summoned, I was named) is formal
  • Passive past with stem καλεστ- as in καλέστηκα (kaléstika, I was invited) is informal
