Etymology

From Sanskrit प्रेत (preta, “dead body; dead person; ghost; etc”, literally “one who has gone; one who has departed; one who has passed away”). Cognate with English preta; Lao ເຜດ (phēt); Old Khmer preta; Modern Khmer ប្រេត (praet).
