Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *baːn) : phonetic 般 (OC *praːn, *paːn, *baːn) + semantic 石 (“stone”).
Etymology
- “large rock”
- Cognate with 般 (OC *baːn, “large”), 鞶 (OC *baːn, “large belt”), 幋 (OC *baːn, “large scarf”) (Wang, 1982).
