The following words exhibit renjō (連声), a phenomenon in which one of the phonemes /m/, /n/ or /t/ is initially added to the first mora (otherwise either having no consonant onset, or having the glide /j/) of a medial or final kanji in a compound, depending on whether the coda mora of the preceding kanji is the archiphoneme /N/ (historical /mu/ > modern [mm]; historical [ɴ] > modern [nn]) or /Q/ (historical [t̚] > modern /tt/).
