Thái Lan
Vietnamese
Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, from Chinese 泰 (tài, “Thai; Tai”), coined with Mandarin 蘭/兰 (lán), a phonetic transcription of English -land, by analogy with European names for Thailand. See also Ái Nhĩ Lan (“Ireland”), Ba Lan (“Poland”), Hà Lan (“Holland; Netherlands”), Phần Lan (“Finland”), Tân Tây Lan (“New Zealand”) and Tô Cách Lan (“Scotland”), whose Mandarin names actually end in 蘭/兰 (lán). Compare Chinese 泰國/泰国 (Thái Quốc, literally “Thai country; land of the Thai”).
