 Thái Lan on Vietnamese Wikipedia

Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, from Chinese (tài, Thai; Tai), coined with Mandarin (lán), a phonetic transcription of English -land, by analogy with European names for Thailand. See also Ái Nhĩ Lan (Ireland), Ba Lan (Poland), Hà Lan (Holland; Netherlands), Phần Lan (Finland), Tân Tây Lan (New Zealand) and Tô Cách Lan (Scotland), whose Mandarin names actually end in (lán). Compare Chinese 泰國泰国 (Thái Quốc, literally Thai country; land of the Thai).
