Info[edit]

The flood flag is a permission group that any user can temporarily be added to to help keep repetitive, uncontroversial actions from inundating Recent Changes and Watchlists. See the Special:ListGroupRights for a full list of permissions granted to this group in addition to the differences between the flood flag and bot groups. An up to date list of users that currently have the flood flag may be found here.

Procedure[edit]

Note that this procedure has not yet met with community consensus.

Anyone with the power to add or remove the flood flag has the right to do so.

When the changing the flood flag of another user, note it on their user talk page so they are quickly notified.

Avoid making unapproved edits with the flood flag (as these will not show up on watchlists). For non-admins, leave a note here (or on an online admin's talk page) to request the removal of the flag, either for an intended interruption or once the job is done.

(We previously attempted a different procedure for gaining the flood flag, and archived requests are below.)

Requests[edit]

Gutenberg rankings[edit]

Per WT:Votes/2010-09/Statistics header#Decision I request permission for Bequwbot (talkcontribsrights) to bot-move the Gutenberg (English) {{rank}}s into ===Statistics=== headers at the bottom of entries.

--Bequw τ 02:08, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't it be above any level-3 ===References=== and ===External links=== headers? That's the implication of ELE, and also IMO logical. (And of course it should be above any other level-2 headers.)—msh210 (talk) 05:59, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was grouping them with Anagrams which User:Conrad.Bot has been putting below References and Exeternal links (eg acerb and estimate), but some entries do have the reverse order. The ELE is unclear, with the only indication I see is that the References section is talked about after the Anagrams. If you feel strongly, I could change it (it'd be good to change Anagrams too in that case). --Bequw τ 23:21, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel very strongly, but it does seem to make the most sense to me to put References and External links last. (Yes, after Anagrams, too.) And, yes, ELE seems to imply that. What do others think?—msh210 (talk) 18:13, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --Bequw τ 02:22, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Topic categories[edit]

My edits in creating topic categories have been flooding the recent changes, so I am requesting the flood flag in order to keep the RC a bit cleaner.

  • Example
  • Scope: How ever many are in Special:WantedCategories. I don't really know how many that is, but suspect it's a lot.
  • Duration: Long. Again, I don't really know, but I'll probably have to set and remove the flood flag multiple times over a long period of time.

(Note: It would be a lot better if someone could just make a bot to do this.) (Does anyone else think that the process for getting the flood flag is a bit ridiculous?) --Yair rand (talk) 04:46, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Approve. As for easing the regulations, I think that's in order as we haven't had any misuses that I know of. Better to start of more strict. I would be for,
  1. Removing the "independent" requirement of consenting administrators. That way an admin needs only another one to approve of it.
  2. Removing the "Record changes in the flood flag" and just note when a task is complete.
  3. Shortening the waiting time to 24 hours.
--Bequw τ 16:58, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Approve, please mark the edits as minor. And yes, there are some 'bad categories' (or dubious ones) in there which I've left alone. I wouldn't bother asking for a flood flag every time, just turn the flag on and off as needed. Mglovesfun (talk) 17:01, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. And certainly, if the approval has been granted, then you merely need to find an active admin currently online to ask directly for a switch on or off if you can't do it yourself (or feel ethically bound to do so). --EncycloPetey 20:50, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quotation headers[edit]

On entries with a quotation header and single definition line, I (Bequw (talkcontribsrights)) would like to move the quotations under the definitions (example edit). Quotes should be associated with a definition when possible and these are the easy ones to fix. There are about 3000 entries so it would take a few days. --Bequw τ 01:40, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Turning on --Bequw τ 14:53, 20 January 2011 (UTC) Turned off. --Bequw τ 17:14, 21 January 2011 (UTC). Turning on again --Bequw τ 19:38, 21 January 2011 (UTC). Off again. --Bequw τ 02:31, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish Declension templates[edit]

Purpose: To replace an old class of Finnish declension templates. I will use WT:AWB.

heyzeuss 15:23, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're replacing {{fi-noun}} with {{infl}}? Why? --Yair rand (talk) 19:46, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. -- Prince Kassad 19:49, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The templates {{fi-noun}}, {{fi-adj}}, etc. are depreciated because they contain references to outdated declension appendices. We have stopped using the part of speech section for declension and started using a separate section with actual declension tables. We can't change the fi-xxx templates until all of the associated entries have been updated with the new declension tables. After that, we can fix the fi-xxx templates and start using them again. For now, we are stuck with {{infl|fi|noun}}. See:

heyzeuss 13:12, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but {{fi-noun}} says it can be used without parameters. So it should be easy to just remove all the parameters (and add the declension table of course), and once you're done processing all pages using fi-noun, removing the parameters from the code altogether. The point is that {{infl}} should not be used for languages which we have many entries in. -- Prince Kassad 14:56, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't correct you. :) {{fi-noun}} works without parameters, but I'm having trouble with {{fi-adj}} because it leaves a superscripted question mark when it has parameters for comparatives and superlatives. I can probably live with that until somebody fixes it. I will use the fi-xxx templates. ~ heyzeuss 17:47, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I got the adjectives to work, but it's kind of a kludge. The third parameter has to be present, but blank. You may all like to see the conversation that I'm having with people who prefer using {{infl}}. ~ heyzeuss 17:43, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish Declension templates[edit]

Purpose: To replace an old class of Finnish declension templates. I will use WT:AWB.

{{wikipedia}} template in headers[edit]

I'd like to bot-move (Bequwbot (talkcontribsrights)) {{wikipedia}} templates that are above the first L2 into the first one, on pages where there are multiple language entries. This will help layout with Tabbed Languages, logical consistency, and editing (an editor adding a language doesn't have to worry about header data matching their new definitions). If we exclude those with Proper noun headers there are about 2000, otherwise there will are about 2400. Does this sound good (please comment on whether or not proper nouns should be excluded)?

--Bequw τ 02:20, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I like your idea. And I don't think proper nouns should be excluded. --Daniel 02:24, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone else? Should I just go for it? --Bequw τ 22:01, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, well I'm going to go ahead with it as it seems uncontroversial. --Bequw τ 16:22, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. --Bequw τ 23:30, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CS redirects[edit]

I (Bequw (talkcontribsrights)) would like the flood flag to delete the old Conversion script capital-letter redirects. From WT:TODO#Remove capital letter redirects there was consensus to do this. RU had another process deleting these, but it's not running anymore. There's a couple thousand still extant in the previous lists I made. It shouldn't take more than a day or so. --Bequw τ 01:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to turn it on. --Bequw τ 14:43, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. --Bequw τ 19:33, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For flood flag, changing < to 'from' which I don't oppose, furthermore there's no rule against it though there's no rule really for it either. Needs one more approval. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:57, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As noted at WT:BP#Bot request, {{es-verb form of}} is frequently called with its first unnamed parameter (or synonyms thereof) wikified (e.g., [[foo]]), which prevents the lemma form as displayed in the form-of entry from linking to the appropriate (Spanish) section of the lemma form's entry. I'm assigning my other account, Daneel Olivaw (talkcontribs), the flood flag to fix these so they display e.g. foo (without brackets) and thus link to the Spanish section, using code as described in that BP discussion.—msh210 (talk) 16:24, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've manually (well, ocularly) checked every edit until now, approximately 100 edits in all. I'll stop checking every edit from here on in. Please indefinitely block Daneel Olivaw (talkcontribs) if you suspect any problem.—msh210 (talk) 16:52, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me. It's at Wiktionary:Grease pit/2012/August#Bot request, not the BP.—msh210 (talk) 16:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Approve (obviously) --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:11, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, thanks. Per the new "Procedure" above, I saw no need to post a request; but I thought I should document somewhere what I'm doing, so posted it here.—msh210 (talk) 05:39, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It seems pretty ridiculous to me. IMO, we trust anyone that has a bot flagged account or admin rights to be responsible (i.e., create a thread at the GP or BP if it's really a big deal). Also, I have a feeling nobody's noticing this. BTW, I love the Asimovian reference. I only regret that he became a plot aspect instead of a character as the series progressed. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 13:47, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, all I've read by him is I, Robot, The Caves of Steel, and The Naked Sun, so I don't know how Olivaw (or anything else) is as the series progresses. Seeking a bot name, I figured I might as well use the name of an actual bot.—msh210 (talk) 16:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly — I noticed this, and appreciated it. Avoid the appearance of impropriety, and all that. Secondly — I agree with Μετάknowledge about Olivaw: Asimov enjoyed tying together unrelated books with implications, or more-than-implications, that they all belonged to the same universe. Olivaw is great in the stories in the Robot series that were written to be stories, but is not so great in the tying-together–type stories. —RuakhTALK 19:06, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Considering how few people notice what goes on in this page... but improptiety-avoidance is still a fine thing if you care about it. I read all his sci-fi books on a semilegal Hungarian website years ago, but the siteowners got caught. That said, almost all of his books have some redeeming qualities (but his references to Roman history are painful, because he so obviously knows nothing about Latin grammar). --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:24, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done, deflagged.—msh210 (talk) 16:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Now I'm doing exactly the same thing, for the same reason, for {{nonstandard spelling of}}.—msh210 (talk) 16:50, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the first 51 by hand (eye again), and will not check all of the rest. Block as needed, natch.—msh210 (talk) 17:03, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Deflagged.—msh210 (talk) 17:39, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Now I'm doing exactly the same thing, for the same reason, for {{form of}}, {{conjugation of}}, and {{inflection of}}, in Polish sections only, for pages edited by user:Pofficerbot only. (I say "exactly the same thing", which is true, but note that the code is somewhat different because I'm restricting it to Polish sections.) I've done some 50, checked each, am flagging, and won't check all the rest. Again, of course, block as necessary.—msh210 (talk) 20:35, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

And {{vocative of}}, while I'm at it.—msh210 (talk) 20:51, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And {{locative of}} and {{genitive of}}.—msh210 (talk) 21:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done, deflagged.—msh210 (talk) 15:39, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

user:msh210 adding lang parameter to {{homophones}}[edit]

I'm flagging myself for the purpose above; just letting y'all know.—msh210 (talk) 18:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unflagged. It needs to be done, but there are too many entries to do it the way I proposed to.—msh210 (talk) 19:21, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

user:Daneel Olivaw adding lang parameter to {{homophones}}[edit]

I'm flagging Daneel Olivaw (talkcontribs) for the purpose above. He'll use python replace.py -fix:homophones -always -transcludes:homophones from the pywikipediabot library with the following user-fixes.py:

# -*- coding: utf-8  -*-

#
# This is only an example. Don't use it.
#

import re

def homophix(match):
    return re.sub(ur'(\{\{homophones\|)([^}=]*\}\})',
                  ur'\1lang={{subst:langrev|'+match.group(1)+ur'}}|\2',
                  match.group(0)
                  )

fixes['homophones'] = {
    'regex': True,
	'msg': {'_default':'add lang to homophones'},
	'replacements': [
	    (ur'(?m)^== *([^=]+) *==((?!==(?!=))[^\n]*\n)*', homophix)
	]
}
# Thanks to Sorawee Porncharoenwase [[user:nullzero]] for help on pywikipedia-l
# http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/pywikipedia-l/2013-May/thread.html

—msh210 (talk) 07:55, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Now added -ns:0 to the command line. I'll revert Daneel Olivaw's talkpage edits.—msh210 (talk) 16:25, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done; deflagging.—msh210 (talk) 04:09, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I should probably have flood flag because I've been going through Category:Ancient Greek verb forms and replacing {{head}} with {{grc-verb form}}. There are still more than 400 entries, and Recent Changes is being swamped with my edits. — Eru·tuon 00:31, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Erutuon, do you want it right now? Also, in the future it is probably more efficient just to ask an admin who's online directly. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:33, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Metaknowledge: Yes, I'm going to finish the job now. — Eru·tuon 00:42, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Erutuon: Done. Ping me when you want it removed (else it expires in a day). —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:13, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Erutuon: Frustratingly, it doesn't seem to be working (and this has been a problem in the past as well). You can just go ahead and flood things for now, but in the future, you should get a bot account to avoid this. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:15, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Metaknowledge: Well, I've finished that job. You can remove the flood flag. Yeah, I should probably have a bot. If I can figure out pywikibot... — Eru·tuon 02:38, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Erutuon: I think you could make good use of pywikibot, and strictly speaking, you could use a bot account for AWB work or whatever. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 02:43, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User:Vis M[edit]

Hi, I am currently adding pronunciation audio files for Malayalam language lemmas. For now, I have got 2000 pronunciation audio files to add, all recorded using LinguaLibre (Commons:Category:Lingua Libre pronunciation by Vis M) and a decent mic set up (condenser mic+XLR audio interface). I will soon be recording for the remaining 3000 Malayalam lemmas of Wiktionary missing pronunciation audio.

I will be adding all of them manually but with macro key assistance. I have already added audios to a lot of entries, see Category:Malayalam terms with audio links. So please assign me the flood flag right to avoid flushing other edits in recent changes. Thank you! Vis M (talk) 12:20, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
