German[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈaʊsˌlaɪən/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: aus‧lei‧hen

Verb[edit]

ausleihen (class 1 strong, third-person singular present leiht aus, past tense lieh aus, past participle ausgeliehen, auxiliary haben)

  1. (transitive) to borrow
  2. (transitive) to lend

Usage notes[edit]

  • For the distinction between both senses see the notes at leihen.
  • The compound ausleihen is slightly more restricted than the simplex leihen. Firstly, it is generally used only with things, not amounts of money. Further, ausleihen often (though not necessarily) implies that the borrower will take the thing with them for a certain time, rather than just use it on the spot.
