[edit]From Proto-Finnic *emä (compare Estonian ema), from Proto-Uralic *emä (compare Hungarian eme (“sow”), Tundra Nenets небя (nyebya)).[1]
Mostly displaced in the sense “mother (of a person)” by the borrowed äiti.
