From Proto-Hmong *qæwᶜ (egg). Cognate with Proto-Mien *kləuᶜ (id),[1] as well as Old Chinese (OC *ɡ·roːlʔ, *ɡ·roːnʔ, “egg”);[2] note also similarities to Proto-Tai *qraj (id), whence Lao ໄຂ່ (khai, id) and Thai ไข่ (kài, id).
