From Proto-Indo-European *yeh₂- (to beg, request). Cognate with Tocharian B yāsk- (to beg), Ancient Greek ζῆλος (zêlos, zeal, ardor), Old Irish áilid (wishes strongly, implores). याच् (yāc) is likely an enlargement of the root.
