Etymology

Short so (“id”) + pronoun suffix re.

Pronoun

それ (kanji 其れ, romaji sore)

1. (deictically) that one near you (near the addressee)
2. (anaphorically) the one we are talking about (one of the speaker and the addressee knows)

     それの年の十二月の二十日あまり一日の日の戌の刻に、門出す。

Usage notes

• The hiragana spelling (それ) is preferred to the kanji spelling (其れ), which is rarely used.
