From Proto-Slavic *pravъ, from Proto-Indo-European *proHwo- (right judge, master), ultimately from *per-. Compare пра́вда (právda). Cognate with Latin prōvincia (territory, dominion, office, duty, province), Proto-Germanic *frawjô (lord).
