From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas (red), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red. Also related to लोहित (lóhita), लोह (lohá) and रुधिर (rudhira, red).
