From Proto-Tai *toːnᴬ (“to castrate”).

Cognate with Lao ຕອນ (tǭn), Lü ᦎᦸᧃ (ṫoan), Shan တွၼ် (tǎun), Zhuang don.

Compare Middle Chinese 驐 (MC twon).
