In the bronze script it is a phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *doːns): phonetic 厂 (OC *hŋaːnʔ, *hŋaːns) + semantic 殳, and an ideogrammic compound (會意/会意): semantic 厂 + semantic 殳 showing a hand breaking a stone with fragments coming off (Li Xueqin, 2012).
